About the reasons for
setting up GHOTI.
Recently I was trying to find the email address of a friend in Sydney
who I know has the internet connected. But after trying every email
address searcher and directory on the net, I came to realise that all
these directories have one fatal flaw. Apart from the information
readily available in the White Pages, listings are only created by
people who visit the site and register their details. If you don't know
the directory exists (and none of my friends or family did) then you
don't know you have to go there to be listed. Consequently there are
very few residential listings. This may be a little different in
countries where it is common to list your email address in the White
Pages, if there are any, but here in Australia it is usually only
businesses that get those listings. It also means that you can really
only search by name, and if you get 23 people in the same city, you have
no way of telling them apart.
Rather
than make another copy of the white pages, where you are listed whether
you want to be or not, my idea
is to
create an email directory for people who want to be
listed. One where you can search by name, address, school or business details,
even their ICQ or MSN names. Some people, for their own reasons, do not want to have their details
publicly available. The people who get silent listings for their phone
numbers. I've thought of them too. You can opt to have no listing at
all, or list your details but have all contact email forwarded through
me. Everybody listing through the website has to confirm that they want to be included. This will stop
any malicious third party entries. The database will be slower growing
by this method, but the directory will be a better product for it.
Advertising and word of mouth will keep the numbers growing steadily.
This site will
only be truly successful if other people believe in it as I do. I am convinced
it is a good idea, and that there really is a need for it. If you have read this
far then you are obviously interested. To list your own details, click on the
"Add Listing" link above. Please also help me out by
spreading the word to your friends, family, workmates, etc. As they say,
"the more, the merrier" but I think in this case it's "the more,
the more successful".
Thanx for
visiting, have a nice day and maybe I'll see you when you come to visit our
beautiful Gold Coast.
